Viktor E. Frankl, an Austrian psychiatrist and survivor of the holocaust is one of my heroes. Frankl believed that life is primarily a quest for meaning: to find meaning in doing something significant, in caring for somebody, and in courage during difficult times. Frankl frequently talked about the last of human freedoms being the choice of one’s attitude in any given circumstance – the choice to choose one’s way.
Dr. Usha Salagame personifies this attitude in many ways. She has always chosen a path that felt right by her. Be it her decision to put her career on the back seat and focus on raising her children, to deciding to go in for a doctorate as a mature student. When life threw her a curveball in the form of cancer, she chose to fight it, while simultaneously working on, and completing her PhD.
Dr. Salagame lives with her family in Sydney, Australia. She actively espouses the cause of spreading cancer awareness and sits on the advisory panel of organisations such Pink Sari Inc., and Head and Neck Cancer Australia (HANCA). She is also a trained cancer consumer for Cancer Voices, New South Wales.
